Project X Zone 2 is the sequel to Banpresto and Monolith Soft's action RPG for the 3DS. The game is set in a universe where characters from Capcom, Sega, and Namco Bandai Games franchises join forces to battle mysterious new foes threatening their respective worlds in a 'crossover' storyline.
Characters are represented in the Project X Zone series as either Pair or Solo Units; Pair Units are two characters working as one controllable party member both on stage maps and battles, while Solo Units naturally represent a single powerful character. Both units are recruited as the player progresses through the story, and are deployed on isometric battlefields with grid-based movement.
Making contact with enemy forces on the map initiates battles. Project X Zone 2 will feature an extension of the first title's Cross Active Battle system featuring fighting game style controls that mix directional inputs and commands with additional button presses. Dealing damage to enemy units gradually fills the Cross Power gauge that allows players to unleash special attacks or other moves on the map.
